about me

hi, I’m zach. my birding journey started a couple years ago when I received a bird buddy as a christmas gift. the very first visitor — a black-capped chickadee — got me hooked instantly.

I’ve always loved technology (I work for a major wireless carrier), and backyard birding gave me a new way to combine that curiosity with nature. I live in the upstate of South Carolina (zone 8a if you’re keeping score), where I spend time with my daughter and my german wirehaired pointer, pearl, who’s always eager to chase the squirrels away from the feeders.

about this project

my favorite bird is the brown-headed nuthatch, a little squeaky-voiced bird with tons of character. they were part of the inspiration for this project.

this project is built around BirdNET-Pi, a raspberry pi–powered bird listening station that uses AI to identify birds by their songs and calls. it automatically logs species, generates data charts, and helps me share the story of what’s happening right in my backyard.

the project combines birding and technology, from feeder videos to species charts to social media posts. over time, I also hope to contribute data to community science platforms like eBird and BirdWeather.
